Module

Keeping our Communities Safe from Crime

Author: Jim Kessler, Rachel Laser and Nikki Yamashiro
In The Culture Program

Abstract

This module calls for the federal government to commit to a federal reengagement in crime fighting to keep our communities and our families safe from crime.

Description

After fourteen years of decline, violent crime has increased in 2 of the past 3 years. It’s no accident. Under George Bush, the federal government has disengaged on crime just as millions of prisoners are due to be released from confinement. We must protect our communities and our families by calling for federal reengagement in crime fighting through a renewed legislative approach that makes crime fighting a national priority again. This module describes the federal government’s disengagement under the Bush administration, proposes a 21st century comprehensive crime bill, provides suggestions on how to roll out this event, and offers responses to possible critiques.
