Module

Finishing the Job in Afghanistan

Author: Matt Bennett, Sean Barney and Scott Payne
In The National Security Program

Abstract

This module outlines a strategy to fight back against a resurgent enemy in Afghanistan—by returning America’s focus to the true central front in the war on terrorism.

Description

Seven years after 9/11, the Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan and al Qaeda is planning attacks against America from its new safe haven on the border. Yet President Bush diverted America’s attention to Iraq and has weakened the military’s ability to respond. We need to take the fight to our enemies where they live by redeploying forces from Iraq to Afghanistan, leaning on NATO to supply more troops and building more capable Afghani security forces. This module describes what’s at stake, outlines a strategy to win in Afghanistan and provides suggestions to roll out your plan to the public.
